Cri me and Punishment Workshop
NEW WORKSHOP – Launching September 2025!
We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of our brand-new Crime & Punishment workshop – an unforgettable, spine-tingling journey through the justice systems of the past… brought to life in your school hall!
Step into history as your pupils meet the hooded executioner, take part in a dramatic mock trial, join a witch hunt, handle replica punishment devices, and explore real crimes, verdicts, and consequences through role-play, investigations, and group challenges.
Designed for up to 4 classes in a single school day (9am–3pm) – perfect for a whole year group or key stage!
Sessions Include:
Introduction: Entering a darkened school hall, the executioner will be stood, silent and hooded, waiting for the children to enter and take their places. Once everybody is seated, he will begin by introducing himself and explaining what his job entails. Wide-eyed with intrigue, the children will be hooked!
Mock Trial: The children will get to experience a meticulously planned-out criminal trial. The workshop leader will now play the role of the judge. The children will play the other roles of the court-case. Can the jury come to the correct conclusion? Or will an innocent man/woman receive the death penalty?
Witch Hunt: In this session, the children will learn about witch hunts, through acting and role-play. Can they disseminate truth from lies? Who will be tried as a witch?
Punishment Demonstrations: The children will learn about a vast array of punishments throughout history with the return of the executioner. He will demonstrate how the punishments would be carried out...on willing volunteers! The children will see some incredible replica punishment devices!
Crime or Not a Crime?: In this session, the children will be tasked with working in small groups to sort through various behaviours and actions committed by people throughout the ages. Can they sort them into the correct categories: Crime, Not a Crime?
Can You Solve The Crime?: Cryptic clues will be presented to the amateur detectives. Can they formulate what happened? Can they solve the crime?
Stories of Punishments from the Ages: At the very end of the day, the children will listen to primary-source accounts of punishments that were handed out to people throughout the ages. Some of them will be humorous, some of them will be shocking. A perfect way to end a day that won't be forgotten!
