The Great Fire and Plague of London Workshop
For this workshop, we can cater for up to 2 classes for the whole day (9am - 3pm)!
The workshop is split into two parts: The Great Plague of London in the morning and The Great Fire of London in the afternoon (we can also provide a full day of either if you prefer!) Sessions: Morning Introduction: An introduction from the Plague Doctor and Samuel Pepys (the same workshop leader doing a quick costume change!) They will outline what happened during The Great Plague of London, including a detailed description about how it started, what happened during the outbreak and then the aftermath. Stop The Spread!: Can the children stop the spread of The Great Plague of London in this scenario-based game, developed using real primary-sources! The Black Death in 3D: The children will be able to see, visually, how The Black Death spread across Europe from country to country. They will then be able to see how it spread, from fleas, to rats, to humans. They will learn about the revolting symptoms that humans displayed when they were infected and see how the shocking rate of mortality varied across Europe. Use of an interactive whiteboard and internet is required. Make Your Own Pomander: The children will use various herbs and plants to make their own pomander to mask the smell of the miasma! Ring-around-the-roses: The children will learn the significance of this well-known playground dance and perform it! Afternoon Introduction: Samuel Pepys account of how The Great Fire of London happened (based on Samuel Pepys' own diary account!) Artefact Handling and Investigation: The children will get to explore a plethora of replica artefacts from the time and learn how and why they were used. There's also a chance for children to dress-up here! London 1666 in 3D: The children will get to see a stunning 3D model of what part of medieval London might have looked like. Use of an interactive whiteboard and internet is required. Create Your Own Fire Mark: The children will use air-dry clay to create their own fire mark! These can be painted at a later date for full effect! |
