The Great Fire of London Workshop
For this workshop, we can cater for up to 2 classes for the whole day (9am - 3pm)!
The workshop is split into two parts: The Great Plague of London in the morning and The Great Fire of London in the afternoon.
Sessions:
Morning Introduction: The Plague Doctor, wearing his infamous beak-shaped mask to begin with, will outline what happened during The Great Plague of London, including a detailed description about how it started, what happened during the outbreak and then the aftermath.
The Great Plague of London Role-Play: The children take part in an interactive decision-making game where they must work together to solve problems that have deadly consequences! Based on real events and primary-source accounts!
Artefact Handling and Investigation: The children will get to explore a plethora of replica artefacts from the time and learn how and why they were used. There's also a chance for children to dress-up here!
Afternoon Introduction: The workshop leader will appear as Thomas Farriner, the famous baker who supposedly started The Great Fire of London! They will hear his account of what actually happened and decide whether or not they think he started the infamous blaze of destruction! What happened to The Great Plague of London when The Great Fire of London happened?
Fight The Fire!: The children get to act out fighting a fire, 1666 style. Using replica instruments for fire-fighting, the children will spray water at fire targets (not real fire!) and learn what it's like to work together in a panic to achieve a mutual goal...to put the fires out!
The Great Fire of London Role-Play: An interactive session where the children have to plan how to limit the damage of The Great Fire of London using maps, 3D models of the city of London, and information cards giving them accurate information from the time. Again, this session uses real events as inspiration and quotes actual primary sources.
