Roman Workshop

The workshop begins with an introduction from a Roman Centurion! In full armour, the Centurion will talk about the equipment he has with him and demonstrate how some of it would be used.

After the introduction, the hands-on sessions begin!

The Battle Formations and Tactics session is the highlight of the day, where the children get their very own sword and shield to use during the session. They learn about the famous formations and battle tactics that the Romans used to conquer lands far and wide.

The Archaeological Dig session is where the children get to sift through sand trays to unearth real artefacts and investigate what they are. Some of the artefacts date from Roman times, with others from Anglo-Saxon/Viking times and onwards.

Roman Board Games – in this session, the children get to play on wooden board games which have been hand made to replicate what the Romans would have had around 2000 years ago!

Roman Scribe - using real papyrus from Egypt, reed pens and ink, the children will learn to write in Latin using the same materials and equipment that Roman scribes used!

Depending on the timings of the day and logistics, there are other sessions which the workshop leader may plan into the day to fill gaps in the timetable. These include various presentations e.g. The Roman Marching Pack or The Roman Military Machine.
